Consider Psalm 91

I have heard some believers say that you should simply claim Ps. 91 and you will not get sick. All you need to do, according to these facebook-prophets is claim Ps. 91 and you can do anything.

The abuse of Scripture is nothing new. The fact that it is currently happening is is not surprising either. We don't have to get bent out of shape over it.

Yet, it is important to meditate on the Scriptures and to read it in faith.

Ps.91 starts like this:

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High

Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,

My God, in whom I trust!”

So good. Yes Lord. I trust in you. The Psalm is written for us to understand that the Lord is always there for us.

Unfortunately, we have an enemy that loves to twist the truth. In Luke 4 we find Jesus being tempted in the desert by the devil. Then, Satan himself quotes Ps.91:11-12.

For He will give His angels charge concerning you,

To guard you in all your ways.

They will bear you up in their hands,

That you do not strike your foot against a stone.

Satan attempts to show that Ps.91 should give Jesus an over-confidence and trust in God's protection. Yes, it was Satan's twisted logic. Satan wanted Jesus to be reckless. He wanted Jesus to believe that Ps.91 meant that He could do anything and nothing would happen to Him.

Then, Jesus answered:

“It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

My dearest brothers and sisters in the faith. Hold to the faithfulness of the Lord. Believe that the Lord has beautiful promises for us. Memorize them. Yet, don't be lured by the deceitful voice of the father of lies, who would lead you straight into spiritual arrogance. For as you know, God humbles the arrogant, and loves a broken and contrite heart (Ps.51:17).
